My collection is entitled “The Familiar Transformed“ and is founded on my observations of patterns, shapes, and textures that I see in everyday vistas – crumbling walls, old buildings, found objects, and materials of all sorts and sizes. These sources of inspiration provide a basis for beginning and my ideas develop as I create value studies, abstracting the shapes before me and instinctively translating the little images into maps of movement, rhythm, and space. I try out variations until I discover a pleasing arrangement and apply acrylic paint and collage in a random fashion, and find special pleasure in layering textures and color.
I strive for balance and harmony in my work, and incorporate texture for depth and energy, using line work and color to integrate shapes and spaces that direct the viewer’s eye throughout the painting. As the painting evolves, I create new passages and develop others. The application of selected collage bits and pieces establishes a connotation to the finished painting that reflects an overarching mood or feeling that I know is mine alone; the viewer is invited to interpret the content in a personal way, just as my private expression has developed it.
